UPDATE: Derek has taken on a new side project and will not be doing the Saturday office hours again until further notice. You can still book time with him through the ADP list, but Saturdays are going to be too busy!

Get some free advice or review from an industry professional with 13 years of experience in many different roles in the industry.

Real talk. No bullshit. No sales pitch. Just talking about the industry and jobs and how to get them. And it should be fun!

We made the meeting reoccurring every week / but we’re not sure if it’s going to work until next week. If you have a problem – email us officehours@perpetual.education

Hello. My name is Derek Wood.

I’ve been working as a developer and designer since 2011 now – previously went to school for painting and printmaking.

I’m self-taught. I started out freelancing and then got my first job at a small web dev/design shop. I worked in startup, corporate, agencies, contracting, consulting, teaching, and most recently have been filling in as a UX/product designer and running a small frontend dev team. Our contract is on pause and I have some more free time.

Over the last three years, I’ve interviewed hundreds of people currently attending coding bootcamps or who have graduated bootcamps. There can be a lot of frustration out there on Reddit, but the real humans are good people trying to make a better career for themselves. There’s no magic way to just buy a job, but one thing I know for sure is that if you want to get hired as a developer, you need to know how to do the job. You need to present yourself well. you need to position yourself properly and you need to stand out. If your story sucks, then applying to a million jobs is just a waste of time.

I’m going to be online on Saturdays at 11am PST.

If you’d like portfolio review, or to discuss any gaps you might have have and how to fill them in, or what types of projects you need to demonstrate your skill, or just talk about the industry or get help vetting a school, – we’ll come join me. Real talk. No bullshit. No sales pitch. I’m going to try and do it every Saturday.
